Observation Narrative
This plot was situated in a maritime forest on the slope of a high dune (7m) where tall loblolly pines (24 m) tower over shorter (12 m) but larger-diameter oaks. The oaks are open grown and gnarled, suggesting that the area was previously more open and that the pine component has invaded more recently. The shrub and herb strata are not well developed. The ground cover is mostly pine needles with vines of Smilax and Toxicodendron. The low areas surrounding this stand are mostly monospecific pine, with oaks occurring infrequently. The diameter of the large Quercus stellata was estimated because of heavy cover by Toxicodendron.
